Career Routes, Growth, and Giving Back: Graham’s Journey

“I didn’t do any accountancy whatsoever when I was at school – I did geography, geology and music.” That might not be the start you'd expect from a Director in Accounts and Business Advisory Services. But for Graham, a less conventional route has led to a fulfilling career built on growth, client impact, and supporting his local community.

After taking a year out following school, Graham began a degree in geography but soon realised university wasn’t the right fit. A year working with his dad as a joiner followed, then a short stint in hospitality. It was a job opportunity at a local accountancy firm back home that changed everything.
“It sounded like it could be a career. I trained and qualified there – not the conventional route at the time, but it’s worked out.”
That hands-on route into the profession isn’t unlike Azets’ own School and College Leaver programme - designed to support people like Graham who are ready to learn on the job and grow into the role.

Helping Clients Grow

After gaining further experience with another firm, Graham recently joined Azets as a Director in Accounts and Business Advisory Services, advising a diverse portfolio of clients across sectors and sizes. For Graham, the most rewarding part of the job is supporting ambition.
“The clients that want to grow are the ones I enjoy working with the most. I’m definitely a big-picture person - it’s about where they want to go, and then building a plan to help them get there.”
Whether it’s streamlining processes, embracing new technology, or shaping strategy, Graham takes pride in helping businesses define and reach their long-term goals.

Looking Ahead: AI and Industry Change

Graham also keeps a close eye on the future of the profession - particularly the possibilities and pitfalls of AI.
“The advent of AI is both scary and exciting. You can do so much with it, but you need the right controls and protocols. It’s about using the capabilities wisely - not fully relying on it, but making the most of what it can bring.”
He also reflects on the wave of private equity and consolidation in the Scottish accountancy space.
“Succession challenges, growth plans, access to investment - these are all reasons why firms are exploring private equity. It’s changing the landscape and creating new opportunities.”

Giving Back to the Local Business Community

Beyond his day job, Graham is a Director at the Dundee and Angus Chamber of Commerce - a role that combines business insight with community focus.
“It’s a fantastic network. The Board brings together a range of expertise, and we’re focused on the needs of the local area. For example, we recently responded to a government consultation on the future of Dundee airport — I brought my accounting experience to that discussion. It’s an important connection for the region.”

Life Outside the Office

When he's not at work or giving back to the local business scene, Graham can usually be found either on the golf course - or at the ice rink with his daughter.
“My daughter figure skates three times a week. We tried dancing and gymnastics, but this is what she’s landed on. It’s a bit different — and I love being part of it.”
